Il mercatino

Rome’s charm cannot be discovered just with a visit to the Coliseum or to the Vatican Museums, or strolling through downtown’s streets or Villa Borghese Park. The beauty of the Eternal City lies also in the more “folkloristic” places, like the market, often better known as mercatino. Let’s start with Via Sannio’s market, close to S.Giovanni. Here you can find clothes of every kind, new or secondhand, hunting and fishing suits, military clothes and last year’s fashion. Prices are very cheap, and the atmosphere very evocative: once you’re inside, it’s really hard to get out empty-handed (also because you cannot find the exit), and suddenly you find yourself carrying three or four shopping bags full of shirts, jeans, swim suits, without even knowing how and when you bought them. The mercatino Vintage del Circolo degli artisti in Via Casilina Vecchia 42 boasts, among handicraft items and antiques, emerging designers’ works. For those who love the culinary art, the open-air market of Campo de’ Fiori, near Piazza Navona, is a must. The square’s name is due to the fact that before being cobbled under the rule of Pope Celestino V it was full of grass and flowers. The atmosphere is unique, the stands’ owners have been the same for the last 50 years, and they are immediately recognizable being usually busy with cutting and chopping fruits and vegetables. Besides the fresh fruits you can find spices, egg-pasta, porchetta (typical local roasted pork), and all kind of products, all wrapped up as a souvenir to bring home. Last but not least, the famous Porta Portese Market, where you can find…well…everything, from food to clothes, from antiques to CDs and musical instruments. During the week it is a well-known bike, motorcycle and car spare parts outlet; in the area above Via di Porta Portese there is a little street, full of little stands, (some without any electrical power) and the atmosphere is very relaxed and fun. On Sunday morning everything changes, and the quiet street becomes a chaotic flea market, crowded with collectors, sellers, savers and people from all walks of life.
